Summary

Caroline George sweeps readers up into two different time periods with an unexpected love story that prompts us to reimagine what it means to be present with the people we love。

2020: Chocolate and Earl Grey tea can’t fix Josie De Clare’s horrible year。 She mourned the death of her father and suffered a teen-life crisis, which delayed her university plans。 But when her father’s will reveals a family-owned property in Northern England, Josie leaves London to find clarity at the secluded manor house。 While exploring the estate, she discovers two-hundred-year-old love letters written by an elusive novelist, all addressed to someone named Josephine。 And then she discovers a novel in which it seems like she’s the heroine…

1820: Novelist Elias Roch loves a woman he can never be with。 Born the bastard son to a nobleman and cast out from society, Elias seeks refuge in his mind with the quirky heroine who draws him into a fantasy world of scandal, betrayal, and unconditional love。 Convinced she’s his soulmate, Elias writes letters to her, all of which divulge the tragedy and trials of his personal life。

As fiction blurs into reality, Josie and Elias must decide: How does one live if love can’t wait? Separated by two hundred years, they fight against time to find each other in a story of her, him, and the novel written by the man who loves her。

This book was actually quite a shock for me。 I went into this book not knowing much about it, like I did not read the synopsis nor did I know anything about the author。 So I went into this book completely blind。This book is told in three different perspectives And most of it is told through letters or email exchanges。 One of the perspectives is Josie, a modern girl, another perspective is Ellias, a boy from 200 years prior, and the novel, which basically just means this is not happening in lette This book was actually quite a shock for me。 I went into this book not knowing much about it, like I did not read the synopsis nor did I know anything about the author。 So I went into this book completely blind。This book is told in three different perspectives And most of it is told through letters or email exchanges。 One of the perspectives is Josie, a modern girl, another perspective is Ellias, a boy from 200 years prior, and the novel, which basically just means this is not happening in letters or emails。Josie Find letters from Ellias to a girl named Josephine。 Josie soon realizes that her and Josephine have a lot in common so she is automatically drawn to the letters and Ellias。 She is consumed by these letters and often talks with her best friend about these letters。 She soon begins to believe that Elias is actually talking about her。The writing in this is very unique, I think the author did a great job when they decided to do this in three different perspectives。 It really added to the overall story and made the reader stay interested in the storyline。 I was nervous at the ending to this book was going to be rather cheesy, however, it surpassed expectations。Overall this book was a fun read。 I highly suggest listening to the audiobook, the narrator is really good。 And it’s just a feel-good story At the end。 。。。more

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion。I was… unsure of what to rate this book, which is why I’m giving it a 3-star rating。 I didn’t particularly LOVE any of the characters, though Oliver and Faith were fun side characters。 Josie herself, while I loved that she was finding herself and working through her grief after her father’s death, was just a bit obnoxious。 “I’m in love with Elias” was the biggest case of instantly falling in love with someone you I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion。I was… unsure of what to rate this book, which is why I’m giving it a 3-star rating。 I didn’t particularly LOVE any of the characters, though Oliver and Faith were fun side characters。 Josie herself, while I loved that she was finding herself and working through her grief after her father’s death, was just a bit obnoxious。 “I’m in love with Elias” was the biggest case of instantly falling in love with someone you know nothing about that I’ve ever seen。 Also… Elias and Josephine weren’t THAT great of a love story to be obsessed with。 The writing style was also a bit confusing, alternating between letters, the novel, texts, and emails。 Overall, still an enjoyable book but one I wouldn’t really recommend as a favorite。 。。。more

It took me exactly two months to finish this book。 While I enjoyed the modern day stuff, like Josie and Faith’s relationship and Josie’s time at Cadwallader, I was so bored by Elias in the 1800s。 His letters felt unrealistic, and I rolled my eyes at all the scenes/lines that were straight out of Pride & Prejudice。

Dearest Josephine was cute! I want my own Elias (and Oliver。。。) now to be all cute like。 It didn’t end how I wished it would have, but it was still an clean, enjoyable read! If you love regency romances, love letters, and books with lots of thoughts on life and love, check this one out!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I love the book。 Yes, it was a bit difficult to get into it at first, but after some chapters, I started loving the characters。 Who would've thought that the lives of Josie and Elias are interlinked in this way? Elias may have written about Josephine De Clare of 1821, but those words were read by Josie De Clare of 2021。 It was not a smooth sailing for Elias, who was a bastard, but he held on to the hope that he will meet Josephine again。 Although he didn't meet her again, but their first meeting I love the book。 Yes, it was a bit difficult to get into it at first, but after some chapters, I started loving the characters。 Who would've thought that the lives of Josie and Elias are interlinked in this way? This may be the only book I’ve ever read where what I wanted to happen didn’t happen, but I’m very much glad it didn’t happen because I like what actually happened much better。 If that makes sense。 Side note: this book physically hurt my heart。 The pain was literal, and I loved every second of it。Additional side note: this book had NO RIGHT to call me out like that!

Josie relocates to Cadwallader Manor in England。 She discovers some beautifully written love letters which were apparently meant for her, even though they were penned more than two hundred years before her birth。。The letters were never actually posted。 Josie sets out to solve this mystery while falling in love with Elias, the writer。 This is a wonderfully written timeslip novel。 A story within a story。 It is atmospheric and emotional。。A true romance。

For a moment with you, I wait an eternity。。。What a beautiful piece of literature。 Now, I have to admit that it was something to get used to at first。 Dearest Josephine doesn't read quite like the conventional book, but then again nothing about Josie's story is conventional。 The voice and style fits the story so intricately and perfectly。 Beyond the fact that Caroline has written this as a love for the written word, it shares so many truths on life and letting go 。。。 on love and the fact that no For a moment with you, I wait an eternity。。。What a beautiful piece of literature。 Now, I have to admit that it was something to get used to at first。 Dearest Josephine doesn't read quite like the conventional book, but then again nothing about Josie's story is conventional。 The voice and style fits the story so intricately and perfectly。 Beyond the fact that Caroline has written this as a love for the written word, it shares so many truths on life and letting go 。。。 on love and the fact that no one can tell you how to navigate it, but yourself。 I'm new to historical fiction but it was a beautiful entry into a world I didn't know I needed。 Above all else, we need more authors like Caroline George in this world。 Authors who aren't afraid to stick to their morals and declare their faith in every breath of fiction they write, without shoving it down anyone's throat。 She is a beautiful person and even though I am but a humble fan who has only had a few Instagram encounters, she reaches out to every one of us。 She makes every reader feel valued and loved。 And I may not know much, but this much I do 。。。 the world needs more of it。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book。 Gave it a 4/5 because the ending was underwhelming and a bit predictable。 Wish there was really more of a twist or kind of magical plot going on。 Read it casually in 2 days。

This was a great story of two people working through their grief。 You see them grow and slowly overcome the darkness in their lives in a realistic way。 The story is told through e-mails, texts, letters and a manuscript written by Elias。 I would recommend this book to friends。 This is one that I think should be taken from the library, though。 Unless you plan to display the cover art

So usually I am not a fan of books written in the form of letters, and this book was written in emails and letters。 I started reading and after a couple chapters I wasn’t sure if the book would be boring or start to get more interesting, but it definitely became the latter。 The story is a slow one, but I couldn’t help getting sucked into the atmosphere and lovely prose。 This is definitely an ode to any girl out there who has fallen for the fictional boy ( mine was Four )。 The alternating emails So usually I am not a fan of books written in the form of letters, and this book was written in emails and letters。 I started reading and after a couple chapters I wasn’t sure if the book would be boring or start to get more interesting, but it definitely became the latter。 The story is a slow one, but I couldn’t help getting sucked into the atmosphere and lovely prose。 This is definitely an ode to any girl out there who has fallen for the fictional boy ( mine was Four )。 The alternating emails and letters kept me guessing at what really happened to Elias and Josephine and what was the real reality。 And the ending was done so beautifully! Also, there were tons of lovely quotes to be had in this book! A main theme of the book is about letting go and realizing that first loves are not always meant to be your last and that is okay because we can be changed by that love for the better。 This was such a cute book and I am glad to have it as a part of my collection。 。。。more

Oof, I need to stop reading books based off pretty Instagram posts。 This book is the poster child of unhealthy and unrealistic relationships, and I hated it。Man treats woman he met once as a journal by writing one-sided letters at her (at, not to) and convinces himself he knows her deeply and loves her, when he’s really just fallen in love with a construct in his mind that he’s stuck her face on。 That’s neither romantic nor healthy, and I wish authors would stop trying to convince readers it is。 Oof, I need to stop reading books based off pretty Instagram posts。 This book is the poster child of unhealthy and unrealistic relationships, and I hated it。Man treats woman he met once as a journal by writing one-sided letters at her (at, not to) and convinces himself he knows her deeply and loves her, when he’s really just fallen in love with a construct in his mind that he’s stuck her face on。 That’s neither romantic nor healthy, and I wish authors would stop trying to convince readers it is。 And in the real world, if a woman received a stack of letters from a guy she met once at a party and might not even remember, and he confessed his love for her and told her over and over how much she’d love things they never even spoke about and his intention to propose marriage, the woman would be more likely to file a restraining order for obsessive stalking than fall head over heels in love。I could have tolerated this book had it been written as a novel。 Instead, it tried to use a multiple perspective and multi-media narration device that just frustrated me。 The period elements didn’t read like they were written in the 1820s, which took me right out of the narrative。 They read like 21st century period piece fan fiction (she writes about turducken at one point, ffs — a term coined in 1982!)。 Had it instead been a single narrator telling a story interweaving the characters across the centuries, the voice would have been more consistent and the story easier to submerge into。 I hated the format of this book so much it took me forever to get through it。 Constantly rolling your eyes really slows down reading。 Even more frustrating, there were moments of really good descriptive writing and use of metaphor, which would have made this book good had it used a stronger narrative style instead of trying and failing to capture a 19th century voice。But the biggest sin of this book is that it is plain and simply *boring*。 The majority of the book is two characters living fantasy lives。 One writes letters and a novel and the other reads them and imagines herself in them。 What a dull premise, made worse by the juvenile concept of what constitutes real love, written poorly。 Elias and Josie both prefer to wallow in their imaginary worlds instead of living real life with the people right in front of them。 If only Faith and Oliver had convinced Josie to talk to a professional instead of using her friends as a journal (something she actually admits to doing!)。 Then there would be some actual character development and growth。The few enjoyable and realistic aspects of this painful read were the minor characters (everyone EXCEPT Josie and Elias) and the resolution。 I had to suffer through 90% of garbage before reaching something worthwhile to read。 。。。more

I'd waited long for this book since the premise is so interesting。 However, I'm just not able to enjoy it。 Have picked up an audiobook and that could be a reason, since, clearly, the audio format doesn't work for this book。 I really can't waste another 8 hrs。 Maybe, a physical copy someday would help me like it better。 Otherwise, nope。 I'd waited long for this book since the premise is so interesting。 However, I'm just not able to enjoy it。 Have picked up an audiobook and that could be a reason, since, clearly, the audio format doesn't work for this book。 I really can't waste another 8 hrs。 Maybe, a physical copy someday would help me like it better。 Otherwise, nope。 。。。more

Made me want to read it the second I saw it。 It's kinda campy and I love the colour contrasts。 I know we're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover but this one definitely sold me on a new-to-me-author。The whole story is ingenuously told through correspondence -- letters, emails and text messages as well as an old manuscript。 I listened to the audible edition which was largely fun but listening to the narrator recite each email address (to and from), time sent etc got to be annoying。 It would have been just as clear (more so, really) if they'd left it at "to Faith, from Josie" and got on with the body of the email。 Those other details are the kind of thing readers would skim over anyway。 The way the author ebbs in and out of timelines is really well done。 Amazing since it's all correspondence (punctuated by snippets of the novel manuscript), but each character's voice is unique。 Brilliantly done。A desperately beautiful love story ensues。 But it's more than that。 It's about finding a way out of grief and learning to be present and thankful in each moment with the people we love。 Honestly, if I had been reading the book instead of listening to it I would have filled notebook pages with incredible 'life' and 'love' quotes。 Seriously heady stuff。And I'm going out on a limb here to say that one of my takeaways from this novel is that book boyfriends are crucial to our mental health。 :-)If you're looking for an absorbing read that will keep you on tenterhooks until the very last page, look no further。 I've come away a little teary and slightly off-kilter because I'm still thinking。。。wait, what about。。。and how did。。。and does that mean。。。。Yeah -- definitely the kind of story that lingers in your mind and heart for a while after you reach the end。Please note: while this is a Thomas Nelson book, it's one of their general market selections so there isn't a faith thread, but there's tons of astute life wisdoms and it's a clean read。 。。。more

They seem like they're just something to make the reader go, "Hm, odd。" In fact, they could simply not exist and the book would be exactly the same。 I also wasn't super jazzed about the e-mail format to her friend that really didn't contribute to the story at all。 A lot of the time, the two wouldn't even seem to be talking to eachother。 It was just an information dump that I believe could have been written into the story in a more eloquent way。 Still, it wasn't a bad book。 It just really wasn't what I wanted it to be。If you want a cute, simple read that contains a touch of romance and a touch of history, then go for it。 But if you're looking for some deep connection between timelines or anything that leads toward the supernatural, temper your expectations lest you wind up like me; let down。 。。。more

DJ is a not only the second highest-rated book on this list, it is the second book told largely through letters and emails。The characters of DJ were lovable, wonderfully real and quite interesting – for some reason Josie reminded me of one of my closest friends, which made me love her all the more, and Oliver is total sweetheart。DJ felt wonderfully creative and was simply a lovely read, one of my favorite books I have read so far this year。

My own name。 Somehow that makes it even more special for me, because it made me feel it was meant to be, and also it made me see my name in a new different and beautiful way。 I saw myself in Josephine De Clare, both of them, and saw that, as imperfect as both of them were, they were, still, deserving of love, and all that affection that the people whom surrounded them were so open to give。 So yeah, I’m conclusion, it turned out to be really special for me。Thank you。 。。。more
